Glossary

Scoring: Cutting a surface partly to make it easier to fold

Void fill: Items that go in to the package to fill up space and keep the contents safer. Bags of air, packing peanuts, etc.

Tools

Box cutter: Used for cutting the cardboard and tape as-needed. Can be used to score a box without a wheel

Perforation wheel: Spoked wheel that makes it easier to fold up cardboard. Sometimes comes attached to box cutters

Techniques

Folding an existing box down: Take a box that is mostly already appropriate in size. Score the inside of the box, and cut the corners, so parts of the book that are too large may be folded down to size.

Building a new box from an old one: Cutting an existing box down back to flat cardboard, then scoring it to build up a new box for a smaller item.

Reforming a box in to a diamond shape: Pick a side of the box. Cut down two opposing leaves in the center. Bend the box where the leaves have been cut. The entire box can now be pushed to trade off two of the boxes dimensions.
