Venti is a block level storage and retrieval system.

Data is pushed in fixed size blocks which are fingerprinted via SHA1 and placed in to permanent storage.

Data is retrieved by asking for data behind the SHA1 sums.

Vac is basically a chunking tarball program that sends the blocks to Venti.

Unvac performs the reverse.

Data storage is basically the same as Haystack.

Volume files hold data tightly packed in page files and offsets to those entries are stored in an index.
