Conceptual scale for something which is to expensive or fiddly for an individual to own in their house (self-reliance.)

Basically the "tech shop" equivalent of doing semiconductor fabrication in a tech shop with communal leasing access instead of the extremes of "do it at home" vs "done in secret industrial laboratory."

Probably veers close to socialism (real?) since it's literally a public-esque workspace.

Motivation

People saying IC production is too complex to do at home. I'm not sure I believe that but assuming it was then it should at least be possible to engineer a way of doing it communally.

Scientific equipment can be very expensive and troublesome to produce; ex. mass spectrometers which are needed for science but their demand is infrequent.
