Doing a "stamp and punch" curved surface by creating a profile as a set of connected vertices, converting them to a bezier curve, then using the curve modifier on the flat model to become the bent top.

Subdividing the plane, preferably by a single axis, is necessary for the curve modifier to work.

Subdividing a single axis: putting a loop in the middle of object, using a bevel with a "width" of "100%" to faux bevel this edge in to subdivisions along a single axis of the model.
