Servers have a list of other servers they trust.
Transactions are distributed (flood protocol) from server to server.
Some deterministic method is used to sort transactions to be run in a cycle.
Resolved transactions are flooded to friendly nodes.
Nodes consider transactions valid when their trusted servers OK it.

Ripple is fast but requires you to be part of a web of trust. This is good for Big Finance and not so good for ancapistan.
